Jezična igra u nastavi engleskoga kao stranoga jezika

English, as a global language, is spoken all around the world. It is of great importance for all new learners to acquire it in both written and spoken communication since it may open many doors and provide many opportunities. And that is why teachers, especially language teachers, have a significant role in young learners’ education and in making the learning process easier and more creative, interesting and age- appropriate for the learners. Throughout the history many English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching methods and approaches have been developed with the same goal - to teach young learners the target language in the best way possible. In order to be able to choose the method which is the most appropriate for their learners, the teachers need to have knowledge and understanding of the most recent and most effective teaching techniques available. There is a common consensus that the lesson which is interesting and gives learners a feeling of enjoyment is the most successful one. Language games are one of the best examples of teaching a language in an interesting and motivating way where learners are intuitively acquiring the rules and structures of the language. The goal of language games, according to Aladrović Slovaček, Srzentić, and Ivanković (2013), is to acquire the language and its contents through various games that stimulate written and spoken communication and help children to acquire grammar and spelling knowledge, which are a frequent cause of problems during their schooling. For the purposes of this paper, research was conducted with 65 third and fourth grade primary school pupils enrolled in one primary school in Zagreb. The aim of the research was to gain insight into the learners’ opinions about the importance of playing games in their EFL classes and the frequency of their implementation in lessons. Learners participated in two EFL lessons - one of which was traditional and teacher-centered, and during the other lessons the teacher implemented language games. Before and after both lessons the pupils completed questionnaires related to games and the lessons. The results show that young learners like learning through games, but also that games are only sometimes used in their English language lessons.
