Sažetak
“ Poljana” (“ Campo” ), the main square of Šibenik, the heart of its historic centre, expresses the life of the town. Although it has lost some of its social functions of co-operation and unity of citizens that it had when it was created, its primary role – communication among people – could not be taken over by new communication media – simply because this square is a life symbol. Poljana gives the true identity to the man-town, it enables people meeting people, life and world. The significance of the square, especially in Mediterranean region, should be redefined - not for formal reasons, but for the need of returning the town to man. Therefore, through the “ extended” re-design of an old building (Krešimirov dom) on the Poljana square, the “ Team 4” proposed a new "cardo", in order to transform functionally and spatially the amorphous “ Campo” into the real town square. This intervention removes the car traffic, and transforms Poljana into a broad pedestrian street, linking different parts of the town. Consequently, the new-shaped square becomes a spatial integrator, whereas it is not the case now. Authors’ intention was to create a new town of Šibenik, preserving its authentic urban substance and enriching it to full value.
