The authors looks at the one of the current central issues in the understanding of political developments on the Eastern Adriatic coast in the late eighth and ninth century, namely whether the new elites migrated to this era under the patronage of the Carolingians, or did the change came through without this the element of migration, strongly arguing for the former.
