Sažetak
With a goal of establishing a collaboration platform to facilitate market introduction, the Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH-JU) reached out to all those European regions and cities having an interest in the potential use of fuel cell and hydrogen based products. More than 90 regional and local authorities representing 20 countries in Europe joined the initiative and participates in a study that is: - assessing the business cases for fuel cell and hydrogen applications that local authorities are seeking, - putting them directly in touch with industry players, - helping them map their local capabilities, - identifying funding sources to implement future projects. Both the City of Split and Split-Dalmatian County have joined the FCH-JU regions and cities initiative, and expressed interest for the following fuel cells and hydrogen applications: - The City needs at least 45 new city buses to replace its aged fleet of diesel buses. Acknowledging a huge difference in price between the fuel cell and diesel buses, at least some of the new buses should be the fuel cell buses, marking a beginning of transition to clean urban transportation. - An urban train to connect the airport to the city center is being plan. This 25 km non-electrified track could be an ideal application for a fuel cell train, such as the one recently demonstrated by Alstom in Germany. - The City and the County owns a fleet of passenger vehicles which could gradually be filled with the already commercially available fuel cell vehicles. - Special purpose vehicles such as garbage collection, street sweepers, delivery vehicles, especially in the old city center. - There are dozens of ferry and speed-boat lines connecting Split, the biggest passenger port on the Croatian side of Adriatic Sea, to the neighboring islands. Hydrogen powered boats and ferries are an option to consider, especially because there is a major shipyard in Split who could be interested in developing and manufacturing the fuel cell powered boats and ferries. - The City of Split has just recently been reached by a natural gas pipeline, so the consumers are desperately needed to make the supply pipeline economically justifiable. The County owns the public schools and hospitals, and some other facilities, which can be ideal for installation of fuel cell cogeneration units running on natural gas. As there is also a need for air-conditioning in the summer, the fuel cells could be combined with the heat pumps, thus providing tri-generation. All of the above applications of fuel cells would need at least one hydrogen refueling station. Hydrogen could be produced from natural gas, however in the not so distant future this could be replaced by the electrolyzers with electricity coming from photovoltaic and wind power plants, which already exist in vicinity of Split.
