Sažetak
Even when we talk about our minds, we use metaphors. When we first became aware of our consciousness, we had to link it to a concept which was more familiar to us in order to understand what consciousness really is all about. This is how humans came up with the dominant metaphor in common language for mind and consciousness: MIND IS A PHYSICAL SPACE. Such metaphor has a metaphoric entailment that memories are stored objects and in order to recall a particular information, we need to look for it. Memories were perceived just as elusive in ancient times as they are today ; famous philosopher Plato compared memories to birds in an aviary. Various studies have looked into metaphor and memory and most authors agree that people have conceptual metaphors available in semantic memory and access them under certain circumstances, although the possible automaticity of such access was the subject of many debates. Whatever the case, memory is certaintly influenced, to a certain degree, by metaphor.
