Sažetak
Background: Analysis of PhD graduation success at the University of Split School of Medicine was performed in accordance with Agency for Science and Higher Education, who issued a letter of expectation with the aim to improve the graduation success. Methods: The PhD program introduced the change of graduation criteria that include necessity of publishing two paper on thesis topic in the current contents with impact factor higher than 1. Two groups of PhD students were formed according to the two investigated periods (2006-2013 and 2014-2017), and students’ performance was investigated. Their current status, age at enrolment, time to obtain a degree, number of publications and the journals’ impact factor were analyzed. Results: In total, 124 students were enrolled (37% male), with average age 30.9 (24-51), 14 of them discontinued the study program. Average time to doctoral degree was 79.1 months. The first group had average age at enrolment 32.4 (24–51) and 32.8% publication rate, while second group had average age 28.6 (24–47) and 0.02% publication rate. Graduation rate correlated to publication rate. Introduction of stricter graduation criteria reduced time to degree for students in the second period group. They had average time to doctoral degree of 55 months contrary to first period group (79.1 months) (Mann Whitney P<0.05). No significant change in publications’ number and impact factor was observed. Conclusion: Analysis revealed that only every fifth PhD student graduated. Further improving strategies are necessary to increase graduate success at our PhD program, preserving holistic approach and students-friendly atmosphere.
