Sažetak
Objective. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of stroke. Stroke is the consequence of disturbance in cerebral vascular blood supply. Method. In this paper, critical review of the review of literature data about stroke is presented with results of our own research. Conclusions. After the Decade of the Brain stroke is still the leading cause of disability and the third cause of mortality in the world, thus being a great medical, as well as socioeconomic problem. All efforts should be made in order to decrease stroke incidence, such as raising stroke awareness in the whole population, spreading the knowledge that stroke can be prevented, influencing modifiable stroke risk factors. New, emerging therapeutic and neurorehabilitation strategies enable better treatment of stroke patients and thus diminish the disabtlity caused by stroke. Stroke must be considered as a medical emergency, because "time is brain".
