Sažetak
Phosphorous is the key nutrient and essential for phytoplankton growth. It is the component of important molecules such as nucleic acids, phospholipids, ATP and complex carbohydrates. In recent years there is an evident decrease in phosphorous inputs into Adriatic Sea that opened question how this change reflects on the quality and quantity of the organic matter in the marine phytoplankton. In this study we conducted monoculture experiments to test cellular lipid response of diatom Chaetoceros curvisetus to replete (36 mol L-1) and deplete (3 mol L-1) dissolved PO4 concentration at 3 different temperatures. For comparison we investigated the particulate phospholipids (PL) concentration and PL contribution to lipid pool from the opposing Adriatic Sea marine systems with high (stations SJ101 and SJ108) vs. low (stations RV001 and SJ107) phosphorous supply. Samples were taken from 2013 to 2015 on a monthly basis. Lipid classes were qualitatively and quantitatively characterized with thin–layer chromatography–flame ionization detection. In monoculture experiments, initial and final dissolved PO4 concentrations and cell abundance before growth termination were also measured. Although substantially higher quantities of PO4 were utilized in replete (11 mol L-1) than in deplete (3 mol L-1) conditions of monoculture growth of C. curvisetus, PL percentage was higher (an average of 25.6 %) in deplete than in replete (an average of 21.3%) conditions. Higher total lipid concentrations were measured for western meso/eutrophic stations 101 and 108 (an average 38.3 µg L–1), than at eastern oligotrophic stations RV001 and 107 (an average 24.3 µg L–1). Despite that, higher percentages of PL were measured on oligotrophic stations (on average 30.7%) than on meso/eutrophic stations (on average 27.1%). Plankton employs a variety of strategies to deal with changing phosphorous availabilities including community response and/or physiological adaptation. In our monoculture experiments C. curvisetus cells were smaller than their counterparts grown at high PO4 conditions. The results were confirmed with field observations. By given results we would conclude that phytoplankton cellular response to scarcity of phosphorus is favoring growth of smaller cells which more efficiently incorporate phosphorous than larger cells.
