Sažetak
Medical textiles, especially its part healthcare and hygiene products (sanitary napkins, tampons, etc.), include products very important for our ordinary life. Tampons are present in women life from ancient time, at the beginning they were only from natural fibres but today we have synthetic fibres mostly viscose (alone or in combination with cotton) and polyester. Their development was taboo topic until 1936. When Gertrude Tenderich redeems the rights for method, apparatus and production of tampons from doctor Earl Hass. That was the beginning of production of Tampax tampons. Today on the market is a big variety of tampons, from regular, to one with probiotics, from organic cotton etc. The question is ; which one is the best and what properties must have it? That is very important because there is a possibility of the syndrome of toxic shock. In this paper testing and characterization of 13 different hygienic product (tampons) was carried out. Different test methods were carried out with the aim of objective characterization as fiber composition, absorption of artificial body liquids (artificial blood), pH value of aqueous extract and strength of yarn). Methods are customized, i.e. modificated for testing tampons. The contribution of this paper can be seen in the objective characterization of the tested samples of hygienic products - textile product - tampons. With the aim of better women's awareness and therefore safer selection for usage, regarding to properties and possible hazards.
