Sažetak
The paper explores ther portrayal of female characters in Roald Dahl´s novel Matilda. The characters are studied in therms of the gender schemas, as elaborated by Sandra Lipsitz Bem and image schemas, as elaborated by Mark Turner. All characters in the novel comply with gender stereotypes and shemas, except for Matilda.Projecting a more positive and healthy image of female characters in children´ s books aids young audience in realising that both sexes contribute to living in the surrounding world.
