Sažetak
It is well known that carbon nanotubes have unique structural and physical properties like high stiffness and strength, high thermal and electrical conductivity, high aspect ratio, low density and especially large interfacial area. Mentioned characteristics make them an excellent choice as filler to polymers. However to benefit from carbon nanotube characteristics a good dispersion within polymer matrix should be achieved. To improve their dispersibility within and interaction with polymer matrix they are often functional-ized. Also, the preparation procedure has a great influence on dispersion and distribution of carbon nanotubes trough the matrix. In this work multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were functionalized by different alkyl-ester and amine groups to improve dispersibility and interactions with polymer matrices. Functionalized MWCNT were characterized by different analytical methods such as Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements which all confirm a successful functionalization. Functionalized MWCNT were used as filler in homopolymers of methyl methacrylate and styrene or their corresponding copolymers. They were added in situ and were ultrasonically dispersed in monomer solution prior to radical polymerization. Influence of functional groups and MWCNT on dispersion and distribution i polymer matrices was investigated by scanning electronic microscopy. Depending on chemical similarity between chemical groups and polymer matrix different quality of dispersion and distribution was achieved. Prepared nanocomposites were characterized by size exclusion chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and dynamical mechanical analysis. Addition of MWCNT has had an influence on nanocomposite polymer molar mass values which, depending on monomer used, increased (polystyrene based nanocomposites) or decreased (poly(methyl methacrylate) based nanocomposites) in comparison to polymer obtained from reaction mixture without MWCNT. Improvement of storage module was observed by addition of chemically similar functionalized MWCNT to polymers. Glass transition temperature, determined by differential scanning calorimetry, of all prepared nanocomposites is similar or shifted to lower temperatures in comparison to corresponding polymers.
