Sažetak
The first oratory in Zadar was built after the Edict of Milan of AD 313. As a nucleus of a future episcopal complex, the oratory was built within the public space, next to the ancient temple at the city forum. Obviously, a pagan cult in the centre of the town was replaced by the one of a Christian community. According to such assumptions, the author will give new insights into the forming, function and continuity of the fi rst prayer rooms in Zadar and its surroundings. At the same time, the author will also indicate the creation of new sacral buildings patterned by the fi rst oratories, with the emphasis on some additional spaces which will infl uence their purpose, especially in the period from late antiquity to the Early Middle Ages.
