Sažetak
Marlstone-dominated coastal cliff situated in the Split urban zone (Croatia) was monitored over the 5- year period in order to detect main erosional processes acting over the cliff and to assess the cliff erosion rates. Results of the terrestrial laser scanning showed that non-vegetated cliff parts retreat 3-18 cm/y. Weathering of the marl is mostly due to the slaking, enhanced during cold (wet) season. Besides repeated rain-caused wetting and drying, cliff face is weathered by seepage of the groundwater and by carving of the rills by surface runoff. Furthermore, more frequent and more intensive rains may trigger landslides in unstable parts of the cliff, as detected in May 2018. Loose weathered material usually accumulates at the cliff base in form of the talus cones and it is eventually removed by waves. Strong subaerial weathering of the marl is a natural process and it is likely that the retreat of the Duilovo cliff will continue in the future. Therefore, a solution other than stopping the erosion have to be found to reduce further risks.
