Sažetak
The paper was commissioned by the editors of the Kluwer "Handbook of the History of General Topology". It consists of a short history of shape theory and of a survey of the various applications of shape theory in several areas of general topology and dynamical systems. In particular, the paper describes applications in the topology of continua, in hyperspaces, in compactifications, in the fixed point theory, in the theory of the Conley index and in attractors of dynamical systems.
