Sažetak
The presence and vertical distribution of bivalve species was observed during summer 1995 and 1996 in Mljet National Park within the student project "Research of Macrobenthos in Sea of Mljet Island". 21 stations along the coast of National Park and 10 in Mljet s "lakes" were surveyed as well as two stations outside the borders of National Park. The main methods used in direct observations and sampling were scuba and skin diving, except on one location where trawl was used. The bivalve species, as well as other macrobenthic organisms, were collected down to dept of 40m. Alive specimens and shells were used in determination. More than 58 bivalve species from 27 families were identified in preliminary determined material. 20 bivalve species are mentioned for the first time for the area of Mljet s "lakes". The vertical distribution of species on characteristic profiles is described. On many stations along the coast of National Park, and especially in "lakes", dense population of protected penn shell Pinna nobilis were found. The list of bivalve species, together with information on their vertical distribution is expected to expand on more investigated stations. Such list could be considered as a base for the future investigations of bivalve species in this area.
