Sažetak
Teaching academic English writing presents a lot of challenges due to the fact that most students do not like writing and that not all of them are very skilful at it. Students need to learn how to generate and organise ideas into coherent essays as it is expected of all students at undergraduate and graduate levels. They have to be able to use grammar and vocabulary for constructing an academic text. This paper will explain how writing was taught in the fall semester of RIT Croatia. It starts from explaining to students how to choose a suitable topic and goes on to showing students how to find suitable sources and write the bibliography. Students are also taught how to write annotated bibliography. Next, students are taught how to write a paragraph starting from the topic sentence and accompanying it with adequate supporting sentences. Some grammatical points which showed to be most problematic were dealt with, e.g. indirect questions, conditionals, hedging, and transition words. A particular emphasis is placed on how to cite sources and avoid plagiarism. Different kinds of essays are also explained, and they include narration, illustration, description, process analysis, cause and effect, arguments, and presenting. After that, students start drafting and bring their first version to the class for peer review. They have to correct the drafts according to their peers’ review. The next step is presenting their topics and discussing how their ideas can be further elaborated. Then, they submit drafts and have to correct them according to the instructor’s comments. The paper also presents the topics chosen, as well as the most frequent mistakes. Despite the fact that this college enrols students with advanced knowledge of English, the quality of student language learning must improve if students want to succeed in their academic careers.
