Sažetak
Hans on the territories of Ottoman Empire were places of social and cultural encounter and exchange: they were one of the essential tools for the development of newly conquered territories by facilitating commerce, but also for hosting people of different cultures and faiths. Innate to east Mediterranean, main Ottoman architectural characteristics of this institution of buildings were defined in mid-16th century when the grand-imperial complexes along the main communications routes of Ottoman Empire were being built. Subsequently built lazarettos on the east coast of Adriatic Sea were instrumental in further enhancing the movement of merchants and their goods, pilgrims and travellers, ideas and disease between Ottoman Empire and renaissance Italy with Jewish merchant acting as cultural intermediary. Examining formal and functional characteristics of these institutions of buildings, intended primarily for lodging and commerce, in wider geographical context of eastern Mediterranean this paper will point out their similarities in attempt to define their common origin. It will show how architectural model transcended cultural border and adapted to new cultural and social practices.
