This article analyzes Diego Bastianutti’s three collections of Italian verse through an examination of their common denominator – the autobiographical theme of exile, which he elaborated through two distinct elements: the land (in the wider sense of the term), real or imagined as might be, that the poet constantly seeks in order to “belong”, and the sea, understood as a symbol of freedom
