Sažetak
Small hotels communicate the uniqueness and the global hotel chains the quality of a destination worldwide. For the transitional economies that strive to become recognized tourist destinations supporting the entrance of global hotel chains as well as quantitative and qualitative growth of the small hotels is a must. Small hotels in transitional countries such as Croatia should learn how to become competitive and profitable from the competitors outside of national borders. The primary research was conducted on a sample of small hotels in Ličko-Senjska Region, one of the fastest growing Croatian regions in the number of arrivals and overnights, but still in search of a clear image. The research results show that small hotels view as their competitors only the hotels from the same location and surrounding or think they do not have competition at all. Hotels located in the same micro region of one country should be competitors least of all in today’s global tourist market. They should be partners in achieving the synergy effect through promotion of the destination, round tours etc. This paper proposes a strongest educational and other support to managers of small hotels in transitional economies so they could overpass their mentality and open their intellectual minds towards the global tourist market.
