Sažetak
In the present paper the author has conducted a thorough research on the regulations concerning animals in the statutes of medieval Dalmatian towns Zadar, Dubrovnik, Skradin, Šibenik, Trogir, Split, and the islands of Hvar, Brač, Korčula and Lastovo. The main purpose of this paper is to describe the rules of keeping and breeding animals in medieval Dalmatian towns, to define patterns which are common in all statutes, but also to detect specific situations in some of the towns. One of the primary objectives is to detect what sorts of animals are mentioned in the statutes, which of them were kept in towns, and which breeds were banned from keeping in the city area. Furthermore, since sheep were the most important domestic animals in Dalmatia, on the coast and on the islands, special attention is paid to the regulations concerning sheep breeding and areas intended for their pasture and in-keeping. The paper also provides some remarks on other kinds of animals (like oxen, cows, dogs and donkeys) which were also significant in the economy of medieval Dalmatian town. The present paper refers to the published historical documents and to the recent works on this topic.
