Sažetak
In this paper, we analyze synonymous Japanese idioms using three different methods and data from two corpora. First, we utilize FrameNet theory and classify near-synonyms into frames to obtain their various senses. Next, we classify the objects of the idioms into lexical sets that reveal more about the usages of the idioms. However, as these approaches are insufficient to grasp the differences between near-synonyms, we propose classifying idioms into various situational types. This method highlights the subtle differences between near- synonyms, covering information relating to the―pragmatic meaning and ―pragmatic context of the lexical units. This kind of information is extremely useful for lexicography and foreign language learning.
