Sažetak
Changing distributions of continents and oceans are likely to have had a profound effect on the physical environment and hence to influence the evolution and dispersal of major teleostean taxa. The long Upper Mesozoic history of the Tethys Sea as a durable, envrionmentaly stable and evolutionary mature biogeographic unit, disintegration of the Tethys and niche partitioning in the Upper Cretaceous could serve to increase teleostean stock in that sea and so provide the initial stage for the great teleostean diversification of later epochs. The central position of this sea which flooded coasts of all continents in the Late Cretaceous further aided this evolutionary pattern. The Tethys Sea is the only water system which could provide such teleostean radiation in the course of the Late Mesozoic and Early Tertiary.
