Sažetak
We are living in a world of constant change, developing science and technology and also taking a part in the inevitable process of globalization in which information equals to power and dominance. According to some statistics, our knowledge doubles every five years. The basic aim of education is to create knowledge. But it is also a powerful tool in the hands of those who it is being managed by. Therefore, the educational process has to be adjusted to those for whom it is intended ; in this case, teaching English (as a foreign language) needs to be designed to meet the specific needs of the learners in the 21st century. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) refers to a specific aspect of English language learning and teaching process and is usually considered an approach rather than a “kind”. It includes various professional languages such as Business English, English for Lawyers, Transport English, Medical English, Technical English etc. This study deals with three specific areas of English language: Business English, Transport English and English for Administrative Studies. Being aware of the purpose of learning English as a foreign language can sometimes be a crucial motivation factor especially for younger learners. The analysis of the research in this paper depicts some interesting information from the students’ point of view. Participants in this study are students of three different Professional Studies at Polytechnic “Nikola Tesla“in Gospić and high school students of the Private High School in Zadar. They are at the ages 15 – 25 and the parameters that were taken into account are the respondents’ qualifications, interests, level of knowledge, studies, importance of English language, business skills and experience.
