Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to present film as a medium of intercultural education in English language teaching (ELT) with a focus on stereotypical representations of race and ethnicity in American films. Film as a medium is in many ways regarded as a popular culture phenomenon, and popular culture is one of the main products today. Due to the fact that films were the most influential medium of culture in the United States, cinema has become a global industry today. Obviously, films play a crucial role in our lives: they do not only entertain us, but they also educate us. According to Belton (1994) the education which they provide lies not so much in what they show, i.e. in stories or situations we see on the screen ; rather it consists of the attitudes they take to underlying concerns with which our culture seems continuously preoccupied. Above all, film is a true reflection of culture as characters represent themselves by their behaviour, face, clothes, images, emotions ; in other words, they represent their ethnicity and race. Furthermore, language is the vehicle of media which carries meaning, and in American films, the original English language is spoken. Being exposed to the authentic language, students further develop their listening and speaking skills and improve their vocabulary and grammar. On the whole, film is an important factor in ELT and teaching and learning English through American films can be both interesting and effective as they give a real authentic view of the English language and are a true reflection of culture.
