Sažetak
The progress in telecommunication infrastructure and computer networks has allowed for implementation of teleconsultation in health care, including real time exchange of therapeutic protocols and patient information between two or more physicians located at geographically distant points. Also, the use of modern educational technologies such as world wide web has enabled the users to follow latest concepts in the profession irrespective of the time or place of their origin, all this at a considerably lower cost compared with traditional forms of education. Therefore a project entitled “ Teleinterventional Gastroenterology (TIGEL)” has been designed at the Center of Interventional Gastroenterology, Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, and Zagreb University Hospital Center. The aims of the projects are: 1) development of a system of continuous tele-education for specialists in gastroenterology ; and 2) development of a system of tele-gastroenterologic service between clinical departments, endoscopes and ultrasonography laboratories from different health institutions in Croatia. The TIGEL Project is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia and consists of two components: 1) web site for continuous evaluation of knowledge with a scoring system for physician license renewal and organization of video conferences and workshops on selected clinical issues (currently piloting at the http://wellcome.to/TIGEL ) ; and 2) organization of tele-gastroenterologic service within which a decision on most appropriate therapeutic procedure in clinically ambiguous states would be jointly made via teleconsultation between endoscopes and ultrasonography laboratories, which would certainly prove cost-effective. The ultimate objective of the project is to promote the quality of gastroenterologic service in Croatia through an integrated educational-consultation approach to the physicians, project users, all this at the presumably considerable financial savings.
