Sažetak
Holding ESP courses at the tertiary level presents an array of difficulties and challenges for course coordinators, i.e. ESP teachers. This paper aims to identify these challenges and discuss them on the basis of relevant literature findings and personal teaching experience in order to shed light on the complex role of teachers in ESP classrooms. ESP teachers are, first and foremost, language experts rather than content specialists, in this particular case, engineers. However, instructing a target group, i.e. engineering students, they become involved in the engineering content and teaching material. On the one hand, the present paper tries to determine the features of engineering English and offers several examples of how they can be successfully practiced in class. On the other, it emphasizes the significance and the need to embrace the teaching of general English in ESP courses with a view to instructing professionals who will be able to effectively function on the international labour market. Accordingly, the paper pinpoints some of the relevant aspects of general English to be imparted to students. Since both technical and general English should make up an ESP class, the paper seeks to establish their mutual relationship and possibly suggest their ideal ratio.
