Sažetak
While information and communication technologies have enabled new channels of content distribution, they have also contributed to rise of wide-spread copyright infringement in the digital, networked environment. The transition process to information society has revealed weaknesses in the traditional business models relying on the commercial use of intellectual property. Technological protection measures and digital rights management tools, while restricting users in exercising statutory copyright limitations, have not been able to effectively reduce digital piracy. While the copyright system remains a valuable instrument of fostering of cultural and societal progress, some legal scientists believe new models of licencing are more appropriate to the digital environment. Among these, Creative Commons stand out as the most popular and widely spread system of licencing, both compatible with the universally accepted legal framework and uniquely suitable to the online environment. Enabling users to understand and choose the terms of use of digital content has granted access to millions of works available for their use, distribution, adaptation and modification, also fostering cultural development and recognition of new and not well- established authors.
