Sažetak
Learning to write well in a foreign language presents a great challenge to students. There are so many aspects to be considered including linguistic accuracy, range of vocabulary and structures, organization and cohesion, register and format. In addition, ESP students need to be familiar with subject-specific language and formats. Writing as a productive language skill plays an essential role in the education of aspiring journalists. However, since writing is a time consuming process it is often difficult for teachers to allocate a sufficient amount of time to integrate it in their ESP classes. The aim of this paper is to give an account of the approach to teaching, practicing and assessing writing skills adopted for students of journalism. The paper determines the purpose of portfolio assessment of student writing, reviews assignments included in students’ portfolios and explains evaluation criteria. The focus is on various forms of journalistic writing and differences among print journalism, broadcast journalism and online journalism. A writing portfolio serves the purpose of providing support and encouraging students in their efforts to master different aspects of journalistic writing by breaking down a writing challenge into steps that help them with the development of writing strategies. While brainstorming and drafting are practiced in groups in class, rewriting and revising are done individually outside class. A teacher’s role is to indicate problem areas and draw students’ attention to them so that they can edit their drafts themselves and polish and tighten their writings. This is an ongoing process and a process portfolio is a work in progress which students can return to as many times as they wish to hone their writing skills.
