Sažetak
Urban tourism is defined as a specific form of tourism that takes place in big cities. The definition also states that it is tourist journeys to big cities and the motivation of those visiting urban centers is somewhat different to classic modes of tourism journeys. Croatia doesn't have big cities but it has a large number of smaller cities. The majority of cities is on the coast as is Istra, Croatia's most developed tourism area. Istra has 11 cities where 71% of its population lives. These cities are very old and date back to Ancient or Medieval times. In Istra tourism started to develop in the 19th century but the real growth of tourism took place after World War II. It developed very rapidly due to climate and attractive coast, but also due to Istra's location. As a result Istra became the most developed tourism region in Croatia. The aim of this paper is to research current situation and the role of urban tourism in Istria and also to determine further possibilities for development of that specific form of tourism in this region.
