Sažetak
The changes in how people live gradually lead to the changes in habits of potential tourists and, accordingly, to the changes in the attractivity of particular tourist destinations. This is the reason why tourism, as well as other industrial branches and activities, has to adjust to such new requirements. In order to be able to meet the tourists’ needs and to achieve the economic development and growth on one side, and to preserve the resources on the other, it is necessary to carefully plan the development of tourism and economy in general in a particular area or region. The tourism in Zagorje started to develop as far back as in the second half of the 19th century when the first swimming pools and accommodation facilities were constructed at thermal springs. In the 1970s, the tourism of the region experienced a more significant development after the construction of hotels in spa centres which are still today the basis of this region’s tourism industry. Although its share in the economy of the entire region is still very small, tourism acts as the agent of the economy of these destinations. Considering the affluence of natural and anthropogenic tourist resources of Zagorje, the tourism of this region has great development potentials. Through its multiplicative effects, the tourism is likely to act also as an incentive for a faster development of other industrial branches and activities, and thus influence the faster development of the Zagorje economy in general.
