Sažetak
In our chapter, we present a case study of the RIT/ACMT (Croatia) collaboration to highlight productive tensions involved in the expanding, transnational character of higher education today. First, we offer a brief history of the institutional, curricular, and pedagogical partnership between the two institutions. In that context, we then describe ongoing efforts of faculty to create high quality learning environments for students, focusing specifically on the discussion posts in the virtual “Café Bar” section of the course, paying particular attention to the ways in which students used this open forum to initiate their own discussions of social justice issues. We are particularly interested in looking at the way issues of social justice are addressed, played out, or ignored, in an online environment. In addition, we look at levels and types of participation in the course at students on both campuses, to investigate whether and how the cultural, linguistic, or economic differences effected student participation. We then discuss the opportunities and challenges of facilitating authentic communication between people of different economic, linguistic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
