Sažetak
AIM: With ultrasonography recognize possible impact of the major cardiovascular risk factors on the walls of the large elastic arteries. SUBJECTS: Total number of subjects was 245 (125 females and 120 males), age 30-60, vascularly healthy. For both sexes, three groups were formed, each with approximately 30 subjects, according to the presence of one of the major cardiovascular risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus type 2 or cigarette smoking) and a control group without risk factors. Minimal risk factor duration was 5 years. METHODS: Ultrasonographical measurements of intima-media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid arteries (CCA) – were done on the far wall, 10 mm proximaly from beginning of dilatation of the carotid bulb (3 measurements on both CCA). The average of the 6 measurements were used for each subject (CIMT). Vascular mass: VM=ρπCIMT^(2 )=1, 06πCIMT^(2 ) [g〖cm〗^(-1) ] RESULTS: The major risk factors showed similar influence on vascular mass CCA in both sexes (Table) – the highest VM values were observed in patients with diabetes followed by hypertension and smoking. The lowest VM values were observed in the control groups. Statistically significant differences between risk and control groups of both sexes were observed (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0, 001). CONCLUSION: Vascular mass could be an indicator of the influence of individual risk factors on arterial wall in subclinical stage of atherosclerotic process or different type (or intensity) of the large elastic arteries remodeling.
