Sažetak
Business tourism activities bring positive features to the economy of a country. Business meetings, particularly large ones, can have a negative impact on the environment by using large amounts of disposable material before, during and after the meeting. Also, congress centers which hold large meetings or events spend huge amounts of electricity and other energy sources to meet the needs of meeting attendees. All this leaves a large amount of waste that negatively impacts the environment. Today’s modern business requires rethinking and reworking the organization of business meetings on the principle of sustainable development and protection of the environment under the term “green meetings.” The term “green meetings” includes the three main elements of sustainable development: responsibility towards the environment, social responsibility and economic responsibility. Green meetings cover all aspects of the strategy planning involved in the process of organizing the congress or event from the selection of environmentally-oriented sites, serving the local food, use of recycled and recyclable products and renewable energy sources in order to minimize the negative impact of holding business meetings in the host city environment. This paper will refer to some research that shows the impact on the environment by holding business meetings and events. Further, it will show how the developing industry of meeting and event planning will have a positive impact on the environment, not only in the host city but also in the entire global area.
