Sažetak
The Military Frontier in Croatia draw its origins from late 15th century through the establishment of the Captaincy of Senj in 1469 which represent onwards the oldest part of the anti-Ottoman defense system as it managed to survive the intense 16th century Ottoman offensive and conquest that started from the late 1520's and culminated, after the defeat at Mohács in 1526, with constant territorial loses through entire 16th century which led alongside the devastated Kingdom of Hungary also the Kingdom of Slavonia and Croatia to reliquiae reliquiarum. The Military Frontier, shaped in late 16th century under the Habsburg rule as defense system organized as a chain of fortresses, stood similarly in the 17th century as a firm defense line against Ottomans, and consisted of fortresses in Slavonia (Slavonian Frontier) under the military Habsburg commanders or under the command of the Ban and the Croatian Diet, and similarly in Croatia (Croatian Frontier) with the center in the fortress Karlovac including the fortress system of the Captaincy of Senj centered around the same name city and maritime port on the Adriatic coast (Moergrenitz or Maritime Frontier). As the Captaincy of Senj had a great military experience from the passed centuries, with great military tradition and organization, the paper aims to present this military organization, the command chain and system, the military personnel of the captaincy, their social origin and status and also the military activities and the role of captaincy as espionage and intelligence center, the role of regular and irregular troops (Uskoks) in the ground and maritime anti-Ottoman warfare of the 17th century. Also, to the certain extent, the possibilities of the engagement of the Captains of Senj and recruitment of the soldiers from the Captaincy of Senj for the armies and battlefields of the Thirty Year's War will be presented and discussed.
