Sextus Iulius Frontinus, De aquaeductu urbis Romae ; authority and audience of the de aqu.
Sažetak
As the author of the commentary on the institution of the Roman aqueducts, Sextus Iulius Frontinus was first taken into a more serious consideration of the scientific dialogue at the beggining of the 18th century with Poleni’s monumental edition of the text De aquaeductu urbis Romae. During the last two decades emerged the natural desire to reconsider and critically reexamine all prior facts and points of view, starting with the works of Eck, Bruun and DeLaine and leading to the recent ones of Blackman and Hodge, raising the doubt about Frontinus’ authority as a person, unevitably extended to the data offered to us by his text as a trustworthy source. In tight connection with this is the question of the audience, recently inspected by Peachin and pointed out as senatorial, or at least patrician, because many explanations given in those reconsiderations were based having had in mind such tipe of audience. This paper adjoins the mentioned reconsideration but offers some other possible explanations for the matter in question, explanations resulting from the scholars perspective. On the other hand it shows that it is impossible to judge someone’s work and his personality throughout it, but excluding the manner of his writing, his style. The scope of this paper is to try to evince that there is no reason to alleviate the value of Frontinus’ commentary nor its authority and show that the audience was a much broader one than the patrician, respectively every literate at all habitant of the splendid Rome.
