Sažetak
Besides mental problems patients suffering from dementia develop physical problems such as coordination problems, problems with gross muscle strength, gait and balance in later phases of the illness resulting in a lower functionality in activities of daily living. Numerous studies confirm a correlation between physical activity and the mental state of the patient as well as the beneficial effect of exercising on the cognitive functions, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal functions, balance, gait, activities of daily living, and instrumental activities of daily living. Different approaches to physical activity, as well as therapeutic exercises under the guidance or supervision of a phyisiotherapist specialised in mental diseases seem to be the best solution for improving functional activities and quality of life and reducing the need for institutionalisation. Improved functioning of such patients can reduce the need for their institutionalisation. Understanding and detecting the patient’s problems on time, an accurate estimate of their condition, and developing a therapeutic intervention plan should be imperative when taking care of a patient with dementia in order to improve the quality of his or her life.
