Sažetak
CEFR is a standard and concept of language education in Europe which can be applied to general language education as well as specialized fields. Although this can be used for professional Japanese education in the vocational domain of tourism, CEFR as European framework is not necessarily adapted to specialized fields in Japanese. Since CEFR recommends application and adaptation according to purpose and situation, in this report, we discuss and examine how to adapt it to Japanese language in tourism and set it as a standard in the course syllabus. As an initial step, we have defined two indicators based on CEFR: tourism job requirements and online reviews by Japanese travelers. Firstly, one important indicator for the target level criterion can be obtained from job offer information of tourism related companies for the requested level of language knowledge. When estimating the learner's level of Japanese in tourism, one of the problems is variety of jobs. The job content can vary, ranging from driver to management, and the level of demand can be different even for the same job type. Secondly, travel websites with travelers’ reviews such as Tripadvisor can be used as another indicator of the level requirements. Such websites include reviews by travelers, which contain information useful for understanding the purpose and problem of cross-cultural communication but also wider context of travelers’ needs and trends necessary to grasp in setting standards in language proficiency in the specialized field. It is also possible to estimate the language level required for the services using the keyword method proposed in Matsuno and Srdanović (2016) . It should be noted that in the cases when service performed does not require high language proficiency (such as transport or service staff), language level has little influence on the evaluation written by a traveler. Using two indicators mentioned above, we can determine the Japanese level required for each job in tourism. We propose the method of estimation of required language level of professional Japanese language education by using CEFR and applying it to evaluating job recruitment information and online reviews. In the cases of an independent job such as private local guides, renting private accommodation (sobe, a recent Japanese borrowing from Croatian language), there are no specific recruitment requirements in terms of language knowledge, as there are no specific standards already set for this kind of direct cross-cultural communication. Such cases differ in two ways: travelers’ evaluation is extremely direct, and it can be required to use the language level of different jobs (for example, local guide may need to perform a job of a travel agent, receptionist, driver etc. on occasion). For such jobs, requested Japanese level can be examined through online reviews. In future, we plan to use information from tourism job requirements and online reviews by Japanese travelers and directly apply it to various aspects of language knowledge to be described in detail in Japanese language in tourism syllabus.
