Sažetak
The question to be addressed in the present article is the following: How is one to account for the origin of religious discourse, a discourse that assumes the existence of supernatural realities as opposed to a scientific discourse based on observable phenomena? The word “origin” is not to be taken in the sense of a specific point in time, but as the reasons why religion still persists today. To answer that question, many models were formulated. For example, Sigmund Freud suggested that men’s religious behavior is to be traced to psychological causes whereas Emile Durkheim believed that it was predominantly a social phenomenon. The purpose of the present article will be limited to presenting a brief survey of the major models formulated in the history of religions in order to identify the motivation that stood behind them and their implications for our understanding of the nature of religious language.
