Sažetak
A number of radical, large-scale institutional and economic changes have occurred in Croatia during the last three decades. A transformation from planned to market economy, a privatization of state-owned organizations, an extremely harsh financial crisis with adverse implications on every aspect of the organizational environment, and finally, the accession to one of the largest communities of integrated countries – the European Union (EU) – has fundamentally changed the way businesses are handled. Consequently, as one of the post-transition countries and the newest EU member country, Croatia moved to the free market economy and since recently has a free flow of labor across borders. Environmental turbulences have certainly changed the way employees are being managed. It is therefore interesting to explore not only what has changed in human resource management (HRM) practices of large-sized Croatian organizations being the fastest adopters of new HRM trends, but also what was the driving force behind those changes. Are they embracing a HRM philosophy typical for a neoliberal way of doing business? How they respond to the global financial crisis (GFC)? Are they adopting EU HRM standards? The aim of the paper is to assess the development of HRM practices in large-sized Croatian organizations, determine the direction they are heading, and discuss impetuses of those trends. Using CRANET methodology, the survey of HRM practices in Croatia has been conducted in 2012 (four and a half years after the outbreak of the global financial crisis), and repeated in 2014 (a year after Croatia became a full member of EU). As there is a research gap in the area of HRM in Croatia in general (only rare empirical studies conducted), not only that the trends in HRM in Croatia are detected, but the overall body of literature in the area is expanded.
