Sažetak
The development of information and communication technology (ICT) is fundamentally changing almost all aspects of our lives. In its continuous process of transformation the emphasis is on the fast access and retrieval of information. On the other hand, the aim of education is to provide students with necessary skills they need to cope with the changing environment. Therefore, besides providing students with basic computer skills, education needs to adapt to the demands of the modern world. Technology has taken over students’ lives with an inevitable need for its integration in educational system. The purpose of implementing ICT in classrooms is to enhance education and to foster skills that students need. This paper focuses on the use of technology in language teaching and learning. The use of ICT in language classroom is a relatively new phenomenon. There has been much debate over its efficiency in language acquisition and learning. The paper discusses its application in different aspects of language learning with the focus on vocabulary teaching. The amount of research on vocabulary acquisition has been on the increase. However, insufficient research has been conducted to estimate the benefits of the use of ICT in vocabulary teaching in classrooms. The purpose of this paper is to review findings of recent studies on the use of different aspects of ICT in language classroom, and to find possible ways to improve vocabulary teaching using ICT. The importance and necessity of integrating ICT in vocabulary teaching, along with positive effects and advantages are presented. The emphasis is on efficient ways of implementing technology in language classroom, which encompass vocabulary teaching approaches, strategies for selecting appropriate digital tools and activities for specific teaching situation.
