Sažetak
Aims: To determine the relationship between the stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and the levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in aqueous fluid and serum. Methods: Levels of the IGF-I in serum and aqueous humour obtained during cataract surgery were measured by radioimmuno assay coated tubes (RIA-CT) in 28 diabetic patients with 10 non-diabetic patients (NDM) as controls. The patients with diabetes were classified into three groups according to the stage of DR: no DR (NDR ; 10 cases), non-proliferative DR (NPDR ; 10 cases), and proliferative DR (PDR ; 8 cases). Results: No significant differences were found between any of the groups in serum concentration of IGF-I. The aqueous IGF-I levels increased with the stage of DR Conclusion. The result of our study suggests that IGF-I localy present in the ocular tissues may play roles in the progression of diabetic retinopathy.
