Sažetak
The paper deals with memory of Franjo Tuđman, Croatia's first President, in the context of making of national heroes in contemporary Croatian society, approaching hero-making as a process of social construction in which different actors partake, and in which meanings of heroism are continuosly negotiated and reinterpreted (Scheipers 2014). Following the notion of a national hero as a multifaceted figure that represents key events in the creation of the nation, the paper focuses on its diverse actualizations in contemporary cultures of memory and contestations evolving around different understandings of the nation's recent past. The central part of the paper analyzes hero- making on the example of Tuđman monuments as a practice of localization and materialization of memory in public space, based on the media discourse analysis and field research of the monument in Knin conducted during the celebration of a national holiday. It explores how the dominant hero narrative is produced and spatialized, how official heroic images and their materializations are challenged in media discourse, and how are they reinterpreted and remade by means of diverse individual narrations and practices.
