Sažetak
Chronic inflammatory eye diseases are a common manifestation of rheumatologic diseases not only in adults but also in childhood, potentially leading to permanent vision impairment and disability. It should be emphasized that eye changes that occur in childhood have even more serious consequences on visual ability than if they occur in adults. Keratitis, uveitis, scleritis, retinal vasculitis and dry eye syndrome are often diagnosed in patients with rheumatic diseases. It is important not to overlook even subtle signs of ocular involvement as it may result in serious complications. Moreover in some cases ocular manifestation may help in proper diagnosis of systemic condition or indicate necessity of intensified treatment of underlying condition. The mechanisms by which rheumatic diseases via the immune system cause chronic eye changes have not yet been sufficiently clarified. Rheumatologists should closely collaborate with eye professionals regarding this issue. Therefore they should to be familiar with the clinical features of various inflammatory eye diseases since they are often responsible for the setting up of suspected eye disease and for selecting patients which need eye examination and ophthalmological treatment. We would like to provide an update of recent developments in the pathogenesis, clinical features and treatment of the most relevant ocular diseases encountered in rheumatologic practice particularly those that occur in childhood.
