Sažetak
Collection of wild mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Lamarck 1819) in Novigrad Sea has a long history and it is a well-documented tradition. Nowadays the natural populations of shellfish in Novigrad Sea are significantly reduced due to uncontrolled harvesting and changes in environmental conditions, and mussel farming is becoming increasingly important in this area. Through the implementation of the INOVaDA project, led by the University of Zadar, the quality and production parameters (growth rate, condition index, chemical composition, stable carbon (δ13CVPDB) and nitrogen (δ15NAIR) isotope compositions and microbiology analyses) of mussels from the Novigrad Sea and other commercial production areas from Adriatic Sea were compared. Also, environmental parameters in Novigrad Sea (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, stable carbon (δ13CVPDB) and nitrogen (δ15NAIR) isotope compositions) were monitored. Results show how unique environmental factors in Novigrad Sea reflect in higher quality of mussels compared to the other investigated site. Therefore, the application for PDO was logical initiative by the Novigrad mussel cooperative and it was financed by the Croatian ministry of agriculture in 2017. For the PDO purposes more detailed natural/geographical conditions that are transmitted to mussels and particular quality characteristics of Novigrad mussels where stated and justified and will be presented as part of Product Specification in PDO application procedure.
