Sažetak
Introduction The aim of the paper is to present a complete integrative approach to the treatment of patients with co-morbid psychiatric and oncological disease. Case description A patient aged 36 who is HIV positive was diagnosed with Kaposi's sarcoma for which he has undergone 5 cycles of chemotherapy. After a year, he experienced his first psychotic episode with paranoid ideas and interpretations of reality for which he was hospitalized at a psychiatric hospital and treated with the antipsychotic olanzapine in addition to daily supportive treatment. Olanzapine was taken for one year after which he achieved satisfactory psychiatric remission, but during which time he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He then had 8 cycles of chemotherapy according to the R-CHOP regimen and autologous stem cell transplant was performed. During his oncological treatment (which achieved regression of malignant disease) the patient needed intensive psychiatric supportive treatment. The aim of this was primarily to strengthen his ability to accept and fight his malignant illness, but also to help him solve a series of family problems, given that he is married and the father of two small children. A complete biopsychosocial approach helped him through the entire process of chemotherapy and recovery and he did not have any recurrence of his psychotic episode, even without the use of antipsychotic medication. Discussion The approach to treating patients with co-morbid of psychiatric and oncological disease must be comprehensive and directed towards the individual, joining together the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of the biopsychosocial model. This requires the timely and consistent work of all practitioners working with and helping the patient. Only in this way can patients make a complete recovery and return to functioning as normal in everyday life.
