Sažetak
In certain respects, translation and subtitling of documentaries about art does not differ from the translation of documentaries focused on other subjects, insomuch as it has to adhere to the same basic tenets and constraints of subtitling. However, each source material has aspects that go beyond the technical framework, encompassing cultural issues and culture-specific references. A special place among such items belongs to realia. According to Florin (1993:123), the term realia includes words and combinations of words denoting objects and concepts characteristic to the way of life, culture, social and historical development of one nation and foreign to another. Therefore, source texts focusing on the description of visual art from various historical periods and geographical locations are bound to be both culturally specific and teeming with such expressions. Venuti (2010) argued that translation theory provides a framework for studying ekphrastic texts and their relation to their source images, enabling the comprehension of both the social and cultural connotations of the source material, as well as those of the secondary interpretation. Subtitles have often been seen as a sort of necessary evil which enables the watching of audiovisual contents in another language, but disrupts the creative flow of the source material, and not an artistic creation in themselves (Diaz Cintas, 2005). However, if we decide to consider a subtitle – both the source template and the translated file - a work in itself and thus a piece of literary art in its own right, the translator then performs an ekphrasis of an ekphrasis, in a broad sense, condensing and paraphrasing the original narrative exposition of the artistic pieces into smaller dense units of the target text and reflecting the original visual input through a double linguistic lens. Translation of realia using various strategies plays an important role within this process, enabling the target audience to fully comprehend the source material. This paper narrows down the scope of its research of such phenomena to a corpus consisting of several art documentaries ranging in subject from Classical Antiquity to Ottoman and Chinese art and translated from English into Croatian, examining the strategies used to deal with realia and the overall treatment of the concepts which they denote, in order to provide insight into this relatively under-researched field within Croatian AVT research.
