Sažetak
In times of crisis the language as a means of communication is very important. Furthermore, in crisis and risk management the need for a standardized language is emphasized, as well as the use of common and comprehensible language for the purpose of clear and effective communication. This paper deals with the role of language and communicative competence in crisis and risk communication Language problems exist due to non- standardized language, multicultural and interdisciplinary collaboration and the use of inappropriate language with target groups and stakeholders. Although there is no single method of communication in a crisis, the use of certain communication tools contribute to better risk management and a successful resolution of a crisis. For a better understanding of written texts and manuals, some authors suggest the use of controlled language (CL). For verbal communication with target groups use of standardized languages formulaic contributes to accuracy, fluency and efficiency of communication. In preparation for a crisis the use of pre-drafted messages and communication methods are recommended and simulation exercises of various crises. In crisis communication, it is important to reach various audiences in a difficult and chaotic situation and provide information in an adequate manner. Through well-prepared communication it is easier to involve target groups to actively participate in the process and gain their trust and respect. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of language in risk and crisis communication and the importance of developing language management strategies.
