Sažetak
Can local legends be used in cultural landscape research? Descriptions of past landscapes, descriptions of archaeological sites, and historical events are often preserved within oral tradition and landscape toponyms. Some repeating toponyms in the area of the Velebit Mountain are a reflection of the former spatial structure and collective memory of the meaning of some locations. In this paper, the author explores territorial structuration of the landscape in the period of the establishment of Roman rule in this area on the basis of archaeological remains and narratives recordedthroughtalkswithlocalpeople inthe area ofVelebit Mountain. Boundary inscriptions and boundary walls that were built on Velebit Mountain in the beginning of the Roman government in Liburnia are evidences of boundary places on those locations. However, reconsidering the inscription on the “Pisanikamen” boundary stone, examining its surroundings and taking local narratives into account, the author does not comply with contemporary interpretation of its meaning. Within this research, a reinterpretation of the inscription is suggested with new boundaries redrawn between indigenous civitatesin the area of Velebit Mountain. For this purpose we reconstructed corridors of movements of communities in the area of Velebit Mountain. Within this article we suggest that local narratives can be a significant tool in cultural landscape research, and they should be considered in archaeological and historical research as well.
