Even though some aspects of the history and appearance of administrative buildings in Split during Venetian rule has yet to be studied in depth, the collected sources have added greatly to our knowledge. By analysing different written documents, drawings and sketches, and making comparisons between them, we get a better picture of the main town square, together with the communal complex and the loggia, where all important political and social events took place in the period from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The prints of Robert Adam and Louis-François Cassas provide a valuable resource for studying these buildings as well. However, when compared to other drawings of the Communal Square dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth century, such as those by the local artists and architects Antun Zudenigo, Vicko Andrić or Petar Zečević, they have lesser documentary value. This can in part be explained by certain discrepancies between the sketches made on site, in Split, and the final graphic prints. On the whole, the images combine a realistic depiction of the buildings on the main square with a heightened focus on the ancient remains. The urban fabric framing the original layer of Diocletian’s Palace is thus shown to emphasize the building’s monumentality. This is why the scale and detailing of other buildings have been reduced, and the overall accuracy of the image compromised. Notwithstanding these considerations, Adam’s and Cassas’ prints give us a strong insight into the transformations of the Communal Square and communal buildings in Split during the eighteenth century.
