Sažetak
Bilogora Mt. is a young transpressional morphostructure of Dinaric orientation situated in the southwestern part of the Pannonian Basin. Its tectonic origin is related to the Neogene-Quaternary evolution of the Drava depression, while it received its present form during Pliocene-Quaternary inversion of older structures. This hilly terrain protrudes from the surrounding Drava and Bjelovar depressions and is largely composed of Neogene and Quaternary clastic sediments (Kranjec et al., 1971). The goal of the study is to constrain the source of quaternary sediments of Bilogora Mt. The composition of sands and gravels sampled at three localities were studied by optical petrography. The studied sediments were previously dated by luminescence, which reviled a Middle Pleistocene age (Wacha et al., 2017). Quantitative heavy mineral analysis was conducted on a total of nine samples, five from Cabuna in the southeast, one from Hampovica located centrally, and three from Mučna Reka situated in the northwestern end of Bilogora. All of the studied samples from Cabuna are dominated by garnet which makes up approximately 50% of all translucent heavy minerals, along with epidote/zoisite, rutile and tourmaline. This suggests a largely Alpine source (Mutić, 1975). The material may have arrived directly and been deposited by the paleo Drava, or it could derive from recycling of recently uplifted Neogene strata. The sand from Hampovica contains mostly epidote/zoisite, followed by garnet, amphiboles and rutile. The proportion of garnet appears to decrease towards the northwest. At Mučna Reka, the samples are almost entirely devoid of garnet, which is unusual as modern sands of the Drava river and most of the loess and older Neogene sediments in the area are rich in garnet of Alpine provenance. This could indicate a local origin of the detritus, possibly from basement rocks being exhumed in the nearby Kalnik and Ivanščica mountains to the west, or even the Slavonian mountains to the southeast.
